Orientation: The Line

Tailboard’s main feed.

This is where day-to-day conversation happens. Short posts, quick observations, questions that don’t need deep structure, and moments worth sharing all belong here. If Tailboard were a firehouse kitchen table, this would be where most of the talking happens.

Use The Line to:

  • Share something you noticed on shift
  • Start a conversation about operations, culture, or leadership
  • Ask a quick question
  • React to and discuss what others are sharing

Posts on The Line don’t need to be polished. They don’t need a thesis. They just need to be genuine. Commenting thoughtfully is just as valuable as posting — often more so.

The Daily Tailboard

Each day, Tailboard posts a single prompt known as The Daily Tailboard. This is a simple question designed to spark conversation, reflection, or shared experience.

There’s no right answer and no expectation to write at length. Some responses are a sentence. Others turn into deeper discussions. Both are welcome.

The Daily Tailboard exists to:

  • Give you an easy way to participate, even if you’re not sure what to post
  • Surface a wide range of perspectives from across the fire service
  • Keep the feed active without forcing conversation

You don’t have to answer every day. Think of it as someone tossing a question onto the table at the start of a shift. Join in when it resonates.

When to Move Beyond The Line

Some conversations naturally outgrow a feed post. When you find yourself slowing down, reflecting on a call, or trying to pass along a lesson learned, that’s usually a sign it belongs in a Debrief.

The Line is where ideas start; Debriefs are where they’re fully explored.

Some conversations deserve more room. When you want to slow down, reflect, or teach from experience, Debriefs give you the space to do that.
