Merits are how Tailboard recognizes meaningful contribution.
They are not points, and they are not a game. There are no leaderboards, no rankings, and no incentives to chase activity for its own sake. Merits exist to quietly reflect trust, experience, and positive impact within the community.
Merits are earned over time through consistent, thoughtful participation — not volume or visibility.
What Merits Represent
A Merit signals that a member has contributed in a way others found valuable. This might be through writing a strong Debrief, offering clear answers in Dispatch, or helping guide conversations in Groups.
Merits may reflect:
- Experience-based insights shared with the community
- Constructive, professional engagement over time
- Leadership through example in discussion and collaboration
- Contributions that help others learn or operate better
What Merits Are Not
Merits are not intended to measure popularity or activity level. They aren’t awarded for posting frequently, collecting reactions, or winning arguments.
Merits are not:
- A scoreboard
- A ranking system
- A competition
- A substitute for real-world experience
Why Merits Exist
In the fire service, reputation is built over time through reliability, judgment, and contribution. Merits are Tailboard’s way of reflecting that same idea in a digital space.
They help add context to conversations without overshadowing the content itself.
Before you jump in, take a moment to set things up. A few profile and account settings help Tailboard work better for you.
